Gorham Savings Bank Falmouth Foreside branch achieves LEED Gold

December 16, 2011

AlliedCook Construction and Gawron Turgeon Architects announce that the Gorham Savings Bank in Falmouth, Maine earned LEED® Gold certification through the U.S Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design New Construction Program (LEED NC v2.2). The LEED NC rating system is for commercial and other buildings to distinguish them as high-performing buildings.

“We see benefit from LEED certified building on many levels,” said Gorham Savings Bank’s Chris Emmons, CEO. “It leads to better work environments for employees, it creates a more inviting experience for visiting customers, it helps us use energy resources more responsibly, and over time, it pays for itself financially.”

The goal for this Falmouth branch was to achieve LEED Gold, one of the highest honors in green building and design.

“We are thrilled the project surpassed the credits needed to achieve a gold rating from the USGBC,” said Daniel Cook, Vice President of AlliedCook Construction.

The project earned 45 credits, which qualified for the goal of achieving the Gold rating.

“This goal was achieved based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community.” said Mary Turgeon, AAHID, IIDA, LEED AP, Principal at Gawron Turgeon Architects.

These features include:

  • Recycled and rapidly renewable materials.
  • Regional materials.
  • Low emitting materials that reduce harmful indoor air contaminants.
  • 95% views to the outside, and natural daylight inside.
  • Open, vegetated space equal to the size of the building footprint.
  • Solar domestic hot water.
  • Solar reflective shingles to reduce localized heat island effect.
  • 87% of construction waste diverted from land fills.
  • Maximized building insulation to reduce energy use.

The result is a building that has 38% energy savings, a 30% reduction of water usage, and fresh air for building occupants.

“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The Gorham Savings Bank project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”

Husson University holds steel-raising ceremony

November 9,2011

(Bangor Daily News) Most major building projects start with a groundbreaking ceremony. In Bangor, Husson University is marking the start of work on an $11 million Living and Learning Center with a “steel-raising” ceremony.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday.

Instead of a traditional ground-breaking ceremony, guests will have an opportunity to sign a piece of steel that will be displayed in the lobby when the building’s complete.

The planned five-story multi-purpose building will include experiential learning spaces, classrooms, faculty offices and suite-style living space for 245 students. The project is scheduled for completion in August 2012.

According to Husson, members of it board of trustees, faculty, staff, and students will attend the steel-raising ceremony alongside representatives from Winton Scott Architects of Portland and AlliedCook of Scarborough, the architectural firm and contractor hired for the project.

“This is an exciting time for Husson University,” states Richard Trott, Husson alumnus and chairman of the board. “The benefits to the Living and Learning Center are two-fold; it will address our housing shortage and provide unique classroom spaces so that all of our programs benefit from experiential learning.”

Unlike traditional classrooms, experiential learning spaces are outfitted with two-way mirrors, storage props, flexible furniture, communications technology and more to allow students to practice and observe real-life scenarios. The business program will use the space to conduct simulated board meetings and web-based team analysis while the professor walks the class through the process step-by-step.

Legal studies students, such as those studying to work as crime scene investigators, according to Husson, will use the space to investigate mock crime scene scenarios. Counseling students pursuing their licensure will conduct and record mock counseling sessions, providing the opportunity for their peers and the professor to offer feedback.

AlliedCook completes project #16 & 17 for the University of New England September 2011

A long time partner of the University of New England, AlliedCook has recently completed two projects for UNE.

Decary Hall, located on the Biddeford campus, marked AlliedCook’s 16thproject for UNE. Built in the 1940’s, Decary Hall underwent extensive renovations including a new brick facade, updated and modified entrances, and the addition of a 4th floor office space and egress. This project’s rigorous schedule was condensed into three months over UNE’s summer break, and was completed for the start of the fall semester.

Goddard Hall, located on UNE’s Portland campus, marks AlliedCook’s 17th project for UNE. The historic Hall’s interior was completely removed and replaced with a modern steel & composite slab structure. The replacement of the interior structure proved to be a challenging task that was performed successfully due to the coordination of an experienced team of design professionals and contractors. The Hall’s exterior, built in 1857 has been completely restored to maintain its historic character while the interior space has been transformed into a modern, energy efficient office space. The renovation incorporates a History Room in the facility’s main lobby where UNE will showcase its rich history as an institution of higher education.

Goddard Hall will house the administration and faculty offices for UNE’s new Dental College.

UNE’s Sokokis Hall is Completed Early and Ready To Welcome Students

August 31, 2010

AlliedCook is excited to announce an EARLY delivery of UNE’s Sokokis Hall at the Biddeford Campus. Three days before the scheduled due date, the Superintendent and Project Manager handed the Certificate of Occupancy to the UNE building team.

The groundbreaking took place in October 2009. The crew was able to completely enclose the 105,000 square foot building weather-tight in just three short months (99 days). AlliedCook’s team of contractors worked diligently to complete the steel erection, wall panels, roof and insulation to avoid winter delays and keep the project on schedule. The job site had up to 200 crew members each day.

AlliedCook has made it a priority to prove to business owners that you don’t need to go out of state to find those capable of doing ‘big projects’ in Maine. David Cook, President of AlliedCook says, “Qualified workers and capable management teams are here in Maine and there’s no need to go elsewhere. The Sokokis Hall project is a perfect example of why Maine workers deserve recognition for their skill and hard work. This project is a complete success.”

Cook was confident all along that the project could be completed on schedule. “The Construction Management (CM) process provides services such as extensive value management, early scheduling and subcontractor prequalification, so no matter if you’re remodeling a 3,000 square foot office building or a 105,000 square foot residence hall, you know you’re getting a quality project. The CM system works and our customers are convinced it’s the way to go. Especially when they get their project early.”

The 4-story, 82 suite residence hall is made up of 3 and 4 bedroom units to house approximately 300 students. It features a common area lounge, fitness center, green rooftop and pedestrian underpass and is registered as a United States Green Building Council LEED® building project.
