This historic restoration began January 2010. The property is located on two sites in Portland’s East End Neighborhood (Munjoy Hill); 17 units in the former Shailer School Building at 56 North Street and 22 units in the former Emerson School Building at 13 Emerson Street. The two buildings, originally constructed in the 1890s, were converted to affordable housing in 1984.
Both buildings are approximately 30,000 SF and have been turned into efficiency 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. AlliedCook worked with Avesta Housing, MaineHousing and Curtis Walter Stewart Architects to complete this project which opened its doors to residents in the Summer of 2011.
The apartments have undergone full renovations including all new kitchens, baths, flooring, finishes, fixtures, and appliances. New common areas were added to the property including a community room, computer room, and on-site laundry and management offices. Exterior renovations included new roofs, windows, full masonry restoration, and extensive landscape improvements.
